Common Fiberglass Pool Designs and Dimensions

Pools come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Understanding how these elements work together can help you select the right pool from both a practical and aesthetic standpoint.

Some of our fiberglass pool shapes include: Classic linear, free-form, Roman, and kidney shaped fiberglass pools.

  • Rectangular or linear: With its clean lines, a linear pool is a timeless choice. A rectangle fiberglass inground pool can be simple and straightforward or embellished with accessories, and is the optimal shape for a fiberglass inground lap pool.
  • Free-form: The free-form pool style can incorporate dramatic curves for a modern look or maximize available swimming space with a more relaxed wavy design. If you’re looking for a more fun, informal, natural-looking pool shape, free-form is your best choice.
  • Roman: Romanesque fiberglass pool shapes take a cue from the villas of ancient Rome, with two long straight edges flanked by arched half-circles at either end. If you love the look and functionality of a rectangular pool – but want distinctive embellishments, this timeless shape will imbue your pool area’s chic minimalism with elegance.
  • Kidney-shaped: Kidney-shaped pools offer a sleek, contemporary feel and their asymmetrical shape fits easily into smaller spaces without sacrificing style.

Pools also come in a range of sizes: small, medium and large.

  • Small pools: Compact pools are an ideal fit for smaller backyards or for people who want a little less pool to take care of. Smaller pools range in size. Total square footage for a small pool is typically around 300 sq. ft. or less. Average sizes for compact fiberglass pools include:
    • 9’ x 17’
    • 9’ x 21’
    • 9’ x 24’
    • 10’ x 16’
    • 10’ x 20’
    • 11’ x 20’
    • 11’ x 22’
    • 12’ x 25’
    • 12’ x 26’
    • 12’ x 28’
    • 13’ x 24’
  • Medium pools: Mid-size pools can be a great fit for smaller yards that can still accommodate pool. They’re also a great fit for people with larger backyards that want a pool, but want to save space for a garden, grilling station or play area for the kids. Total square footage for a medium-sized pool is typically around 420 sq. ft. Common medium-sized pool dimensions are:
    • 10’ x 40’
    • 14’ x 27’
    • 14’ x 28’

    • 14’ x 37’
    • 15’ x 40’
    • 16’ x 35’
    • 16’ x 38’

Choosing a Fiberglass Pool Shape and Size that Reflects Your Life

Fiberglass pools come in many shapes and sizes, but what truly matters is how you imagine it enhancing your life. You might want to spend sunlit summer days lounging poolside with your favorite music streaming through hidden speakers, or decompress in the evenings by gazing at the glowing reflection of stars on the water. Perhaps you envision hosting family birthday and holiday pool parties, or can practically smell the tantalizing aroma coming from the grill as you cook alongside sun-kissed ripples.

Latham offers a wide range of options for fiberglass pool shapes and sizes, from petite to large enough to host the neighborhood 4th of July party with room to spare. We’ll work with you to determine the fiberglass pool shape and size for you based on your outdoor space and how you plan to enjoy your pool. The size should be determined by how you see a pool fitting into your life, as well as by your budget. Regardless of size, a fiberglass pool is an affordable luxury that should reflect your personal taste. After all, you’ll be the one admiring and enjoying it day after day.

Maintenance Considerations When Choosing Pool Sizes and Shapes

The size and shape of your pool plays a role in how much upkeep it will require. While fiberglass pools are beloved for their low-maintenance vibe, they still require regular skimming and balancing water chemistry

Smaller pools with less square footage are generally easier to maintain as they use fewer chemicals and there’s less area to skim. Larger pools may require added maintenance, including skimming, vacuuming, and chemical balancing.

If you have a rectangular pool, you’ll want to pay extra attention to cleaning its corners, as debris can accumulate in those striking right angles. Meanwhile, the winding curves of a freeform or kidney-shaped pool may create more spots for debris to collect if not regularly vacuumed or maintained.

Ways to Make Your Fiberglass Pool More Eco-Friendly

You can enjoy all the fun of a pool while still finding ways to be kinder to the planet. For instance, installing energy-efficient pool pumps can reduce energy consumption by operating at lower speeds. Solar pool heating technology is another eco-friendly option that uses renewable energy from the sun to keep your pool at a comfortable temperature, eliminating the need for a traditional pool heater.

Another way to reduce energy and water consumption is to opt for an automatic pool cover. Covering your pool when not in use can reduce energy costs and usage between 50% and 70% , maintain more consistent water temperatures and prevent water evaporation.

Beyond equipping your pool itself with eco-conscious features, water-saving landscaping around your pool can also conserve natural resources. Incorporating drought-resistant plants and irrigation measures (such as gravel or rock beds in your landscaping scheme) can minimize water usage and prevent runoff into your pool.
