The Ultimate Guide To Choosing The Right Vinyl Pool Liner

February 23rd, 2026 by

One of the great things about vinyl liner pools is how customizable they are. From size and shape to add-on features, you have the ability to create the backyard space you’ve been dreaming of, whether the vibe is tropical, architectural, romantic, or something in-between.

You can even choose the color of your pool water — in a way. While the water itself will remain clear, you can change its appearance by selecting a different liner color. At Latham, we offer a wide variety of colors and patterns for vinyl liners to suit your most bespoke taste. Here’s a look at some of our most popular options:

Liner Color Water Appearance Mood / Styles Best For
Royal Amber / Stardust Blue Rich, crisp blue tones Timeless & classic A broad appeal option that works well in many settings
Grey Mosaic / Blue Slate Pearl Soft blue-grey / spa-like tones Modern & elegant Contemporary or spa-inspired backyards
Reef / Royal Prism Light aqua with warm/ golden undertones Beachy & natural Tropical or sunlit pool environments
Crystal Quartz / Grey Crystal Muted, cool blue-grey Elegant neutral Minimalist palettes and subdued surroundings
Island Wave / Terrazzo Caribbean Aqua-leaning blue Tropical / resort vibe Coastal or vacation-style landscapes

Picking the Perfect Liner Color

There is certainly nothing wrong with the simple light blue that was, for decades, the standard (and sometimes only) color for pools. However, with advances in vinyl liner technology, pool owners now have many more options when it comes to choosing a color that suits their aesthetic preferences

The liner color you choose can open a whole world of possibilities for your pool’s look and feel. If you want to curate a space where you can unwind and relax after a long day, a deep blue can help create a luxurious, calming atmosphere. Alternatively, lighter blues help open up the space, which could be beneficial for homeowners who want the feel of a large pool without the up-front cost and additional maintenance for one.

Grey liners are a sleek, modern choice for those who want to embrace a spa-like, architectural energy rather than a traditional deep-toned blue. A sand colored liner can provide a similar light tone while evoking a natural, tropical feel. Here’s a look at some of our favorite options:

  • Deep and dramatic. This group includes colors/patterns like Blue Granite, Pearlstone, Esagono, Cobalt Fusion, and Eclipse Amber.
  • Rich and vibrant. Here you’ll find names like Stardust Blue, Royal Prism, Disco Pearl, Terrazzo Caribbean, Stardust Gray, and Seaglass.
  • Light and Tranquil: Colors/patterns in this category include Crystal Quartz, Grey Crystal, Grey Mosaic, and Reef.

Texture is another important factor to consider when you’re choosing the color direction for your vinyl liner pool. While your vinyl liner itself is gloriously smooth to the touch and comfortable underfoot, thoughtfully-designed patterned liners add a stunning dimension to your water. Patterns with pearlescent and iridescent sheens are designed to catch sunlight, causing a beautiful shimmer on the surface of the water. Mosaic patterns add greater visual interest because the imprinted tiles create an effect that enhances the way light naturally plays on the water. Liners that have a quartz- or granite-style finish can create a subtly minimalist aesthetic. This causes sunlight to mimic the look and feel of a natural body of water.

The best pool liner color for your backyard oasis will depend on the atmosphere you’re trying to create for your pool and backyard. Maybe you want something deep and dramatic for a romantic, relaxing ambiance that makes the hustle of the day melt away as soon as you see it. A rich and vibrant liner can give you the feel of a year-round Mediterranean vacation right in your backyard. Or you could choose something light and tranquil for a tropical, turquoise resort vibe. No matter what feeling you want to experience when you’re enjoying your pool, vinyl liner pools have a pattern and color that can take you there.

How Pool Liner Colors Affect Water Appearance

Pool liners aren’t only what you can see with the naked eye — they also affect the color of the water in your pool.

Light is electromagnetic energy that travels in waves of different lengths. Every color on the spectrum — red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet — has a specific wavelength that corresponds to the amount of energy they contain. Water absorbs light in different ways depending on their wavelengths.

Because longer wavelengths, such as red, yellow, and orange, have the lowest amount of energy, they are absorbed quickly and dissipate. This is why a red bathing suit is difficult to see at the bottom of a deep pool. While these longer wavelengths are absorbed once they hit the water, shorter blue light is scattered in all directions. This is then reflected back to our eyes, creating the rich blue that we associate with pool water.

While much of how we see a pool is influenced by this scientific process, the color of the liner also plays a significant role. Instead of literally changing the color of the water, different pool liners colors in water cause our eyes to perceive the tones in various ways based on light reflection. Lighter liners reflect the sun’s light, making the water appear more vibrant, while darker pool liner colors absorb light to give them a deeper intensity.

Other Factors That Influence Pool Water Color

The depth of your pool can contribute greatly to how dark or light it might appear. Shallower pools allow more light to reflect back to your eyes, making them look clearer and lighter in color. Deeper pools absorb more light which causes them to appear darker, intensifying their color. Because of this, pools that are larger tend to have more consistent coloring because there is a more gradual transition between shallow and deep ends.

Environmental factors can also affect the color of your pool water, such as the time of day and the angle at which light hits the water as the sun travels across the sky. The undertones in hardscaping like your surrounding deck and outdoor furniture can bring out underlying colors in the water, influencing the color.

Geographic location, and the area’s environmental make up, can also cause you to perceive water color differently. For example, areas with dense tree cover, like Alabama and Louisiana, will often have more greenery that can give water an emerald tint. Direct sunlight can make water look lighter and clearer, making pools in areas with high levels of strong sunlight, like California and parts of the Southwest, look more vibrant.

Choosing the Right Pool Liner for Your Home’s Aesthetic

You’ll want to take your overall vision for your space into account when you’re thinking about how to choose the best pool liner color. Planning the liner color, pattern, and texture so that it aligns with your home’s architectural design will create a beautiful space that has cohesion between your backyard and indoor living area.

Consider what you want holistically when it comes to your outdoor space’s aesthetic. Are you drawn to a modern look with sleek lines and subtle colors that feels pulled from an architectural magazine? Do you love an eclectic mix of bright colors and tropical plants that makes it feel like your backyard is a thousand miles from your responsibilities? Or maybe you’re looking for a more traditional atmosphere that feels like a natural extension of the space you already love sharing with friends and family? No matter what you want from your pool, planning for the right colors and textures of your pool liner can help ensure that the vision you have now smoothly transitions into reality.
